GNLP2123 Adjoining Sainsburys Centre - submitted by Cllr Denise Carlo, on behalf of Norwich Green Party
The proposed site would present a further intrusion into the Norwich Yare Valley. It would also represent a further loss of green open space at the University site and adjoining grounds of the former Blackdale School which has been gradually whittled away by development. Maintaining green space is essential for mitigating against climate change (cooling the urban area, prevention of riverine and surface water flooding),for biodiversity, amenity, recreation and for protecting the setting of the University buildings and listed buildings.

We support more intensive use of Riverside especially for new housing with low levels of car parking.
From Cllr Denise Carlo on behalf of Norwich Green Party City Group
We support in principle the redevelopment of parts of Riverside at a higher density, depending on the type of development, its height, mass and transport arrangements. The site occupies a sustainable location next to the railways station and within easy walking distance of the city centre and yet it is dominated by road and car parking infrastructure and generates a substantial amount of traffic which gives rise to congestion, pollution and road safety problems.
We are particularly keen to see redevelopment of the extensive surface car parking for housing (to include affordable housing), served by the minimum amount of car parking, with access to car club vehicles as part of the planning conditions.
Riverside has currently little greenery even though the site lies adjacent to the River Wensum and so as part of any redevelopment, we wish to see the delivery of more greenery in the form of green roofs, walls and soft surface landscaping and tree planting.

Object to large development on a greenfield site in an environmentally sensitive location which has poor public transport links and would be dependent on access by car, van and lorry.
Cllr Denise Carlo on behalf of Norwich Green Party City Group
We object because the site lies in a prominent location on a greenfield site, adjacent to the River Yare. A County Wildlife Site lies at the northern boundary. The site falls with the Norwich Southern Bypass Landscape Protection Zone (NSBLPZ), which is designated because of its visibility from the road towards an area of open rural character which is important to the landscape setting of Norwich. The site is protected by Policy DM 4.6 (Landscape Setting of Norwich) of the adopted South Norfolk Development Management Policies Document 2015 seeks to protect the openness of the NSBLPZ, and where possible, to enhance the landscape setting of the southern bypass.
The public transport links are poor and development in this location would be reliant on access by car, van and lorry.
